Post-Storm Action Sequencer

After a storm damages your roof, you need a clear sequence of actions with specific deadlines. The steps you take in the first hours and days determine the trajectory of your entire claim. This tool helps you build a personalized action timeline based on your storm date and state.

The interactive timeline tool below is currently under development. In the meantime, use the manual checklist below — it covers every critical action in the correct sequence, with general deadline guidance for Gulf Coast states. Print it and check off items as you complete them.

Post-Storm Action Checklist

Print this checklist and check off each item as you complete it. Items are listed in priority order.

Phase 1: Immediate (First 24 Hours)

These actions should happen as soon as it's safe to do so after the storm passes.

  • Confirm personal safety. Do not return to a damaged structure until authorities say it's safe. Watch for downed power lines, gas leaks, and standing water.
  • Photograph all damage before touching anything. Exterior: all four sides of the home. Interior: every water stain, leak, and damaged surface. Date-stamp everything.
  • Perform emergency temporary repairs. Tarp exposed roof areas. Board up broken windows. Catch water with buckets. Move belongings away from leaks.
  • Save all receipts for emergency materials. Tarps, lumber, screws, plastic sheeting — everything. These costs are reimbursable.
  • Write a timeline of events. When the storm hit, when you discovered specific damage, what actions you took. Do this while your memory is fresh.

Phase 2: Within 48 Hours

File your claim and begin gathering supporting evidence.

  • File your insurance claim. Call your carrier's claims line. Have your policy number ready. Record your claim number and the representative's name. Ask about your deductible — standard or hurricane.
  • Gather weather data. Pull NOAA storm event records, NWS warnings, and local news coverage for your area and date. Save screenshots and printouts.
  • Contact your roofing contractor. If you have an existing relationship, let them know you've filed a claim and ask about their availability for the adjuster visit.
  • Do NOT sign anything from door-knocking contractors. No contracts, no Assignment of Benefits, no "free inspection" agreements with strings attached.

Phase 3: Within the First Week

Prepare for the adjuster and organize your documentation.

  • Create a damage map. Walk the entire property and list every damaged area — roof, siding, gutters, windows, fencing, interior rooms. The adjuster may not check everything unless you point it out.
  • Organize all documentation. Photos, weather records, emergency repair receipts, written timeline, and your policy information — compiled in one folder, physical or digital.
  • Clear access to your roof. Move vehicles, unlock gates, trim obstructing branches. Make it easy for the adjuster to reach and inspect your roof.
  • Review your policy's key terms. Confirm your deductible, coverage type (RCV or ACV), and any exclusions (cosmetic damage, etc.). Know these before the adjuster arrives.

Phase 4: Adjuster Visit and Beyond

From the adjuster inspection through settlement and repair.

  • Attend the adjuster visit. Be present, point out all documented damage, provide your organized evidence, and take notes. Have your contractor present if possible.
  • Review the scope of loss line by line. Compare against your contractor's estimate. Identify any missed damage or pricing discrepancies.
  • File a supplement if needed. If the scope misses damage or underestimates costs, have your contractor prepare and submit a supplement with documentation.
  • Complete repairs within your policy's timeframe. Note the deadline for recoverable depreciation (if you have RCV coverage). Plan repairs accordingly.
  • Submit proof of completion and collect recoverable depreciation. Final invoice and completion photos to your carrier. Confirm receipt. Follow up if payment doesn't arrive within 30 days.

Detailed Guides for Each Step

Each phase of the post-storm process has its own dedicated guide with in-depth information, examples, and specific guidance for Gulf Coast homeowners.
